When pursuing a time of Prayer and Fasting it is important to remember that the purpose of our prayer time is to see spiritual direction and growth in the life of the believer.
Prayer Reminders:
- Dedicated Time - Choose a specific time to set aside time to pray. If you are fasting it is possible to replace times that you would have been eating with dedicated prayer.
- Distraction Free - Find a place that is free of distractions that will allow for you to lean into your time with God.
- Biblically Anchored - Anchor your prayer time with scripture. We discussed a few scriptures in conversation that would be good to consider with praying. (Luke 4:18-19, John 14:6, 1 Timothy 4:7-8, Philippians 2:12-13)
- God give direction and clarity on how you can grow in holiness/godliness.
- Vertical Church would see people made whole in Jesus Christ through discipleship relationships.
- Vertical Church will be an All-In Church.

2. Fasting
We fast to deepen our desire, remove distraction, and develop our holiness in God. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that we have been given to steward our heart in our relationship with Jesus Christ. More than any other discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us.(Richard Foster) And so it confronts us with our need to surrender to God. It is not a way to manipulate God or coerce him to hear and answer our prayers, but rather it acknowledges our complete dependence on him. It humbles us and awakens us to our great need for and reliance on God. As you consider fasting, we want to encourage you to listen to the Holy Spirit. Ask God to lead you in this time of seeking his face.
